| Oh Martin you would be loving the Olympics so much. Remember how you loved watching the European games when they were in Manchester. From the opening ceremony onwards this has been amazing and Team GB are winning medals all over the place. I’m sure you would have got to chat to Usain Bolt when the Jamaican team were doing their pre Olympic training in Birmingham, maybe he got to sit on your bench and though about you. I have been telling you all about it so that you could share the excitement in fact I believe that in some way you can. Dad and I keep saying oh Martin would love this, well its your birthday on Saturday so we will be going to your bench where I can always picture you striding across the grass to meet us. So much love Mum and Dad xx |

| Hi Martin, wow, there is so much I want to tell you and ask your opinion about. You would have loved the Olympics opening ceremony, it was fabulous and we would have giggled at how it bamboozled the overseas nations. I was particularly amused to see that Dizzee Rascal did a live rap slot. Do you remember he played our Grad ball? He really has come up in world from University balls to Wembley! Mind you, I think we preferred Jason Donovan that night anyway!! Lots of love, Victoria xx |

| Took Sophie to see your bench today, there was a flower attached so one of your many friends or family had been to visit recently. It was occupied by a harrased looking student which would have made you smile remembering those days.. |

| As the days get shorter, my thoughts always turn to you, especially when I am wandering around Chester. I can’t help thinking how much my children would have all loved you - we thought of you when Si, Lou and Brooky came to visit a feew months ago. I can imagine yourself and James chatting all day, and Gemma asking you a million questions - but you would have an answer for every single one, and probably with a lot more patience than me! X |

| Thinking of you again today, I can’t believe how time has flown by. I’m so sorry that you never got to meet Sophie who is a little handful. You are in our thoughts x |

| Dearest Martin, four years, how can that be. I keep remembering how happy you were the last time I saw you, so full of what you were doing at work and how great it was to have your own house. When we said goodbye how could I know, I would have clung to you and not let go. We hope you know what a huge part you still play in our lives in so many ways and how very very much you are missed. We have been helped both by our friends and so much by yours who like us keep you in their hearts. Well we are off to your bench and I promise I will polish the plaque so that all can see that you are still hining through. So much love Mum and Dad xxxxx |

| I was reading through some of the transcripts from the memorial
and this message board and was struck by how many people have
remarked on how brightly Martin shone. Martin, you are still in my thoughts and I feel lucky to have so many funny or special Martin memories to draw on. I have been watching Wonders of the Universe with Prof Brian Cox on the tv recently. I wish I could talk to you about some of the ideas - you would have loved the episode on entropy. Thinking of you x |

| What a lovely memorial site this is. It still feels strange to me even now to think Martin has gone. I spent much of my school life with him and was privileged to call him one of my best friends. He was always a very bright, cheerful guy and had a wicked sense of humour - I have happy memories of us sometimes laughing till we cried, usually at the expense of some poor unsuspecting teacher or other. We also shared a very similar political outlook and I remember we always had a good time debating with the right wing kids in the class! Although I lost touch with Martin a bit after we left the Sixth Form, I was glad when he came to Birmingham University and seemed very content there. It’s nice to hear too that he developed a large group of close friends and spent the last few years of his life very happy. Martin - there’s a sad saying about the candle that burns the brightest - well, in the time you were with us, you certainly lit up a lot of lives, you can be sure of that. |
